The Grand Imam: “What the ummah has decided on in terms of speech or actions are the criteria to follow in disputes”

His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders has clarified during his Ramadan television program ‘Al Imam Al-Tayeb’, that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) had interpreted “balance” as per the Quranic verse <Thus, We have made of you an Ummah that is justly balanced> [Al Baqarah:143], as a reference to justice and a perfect middle ground which in turn would entail goodness and righteousness.

The Grand Imam added, “When the Holy Quran describes the Muslim Ummah as “just” that does not pertain to every single individual belonging to it but rather that the community as a whole is based on justice. The Prophet (PBUH) told us that his Ummah is in its entirety is infallible to deceit or error and that whatever the ummah has decided on in terms of speech or actions are the criteria we must follow in disputes.”
